Could look up each county website for data over time and demographics but would have to have a website with this information and usable.
My map is for personal use right now, and may be shared with the public later. I would like it to be topographical based on trees but currently it’s for population.
I found a website (2nd link above) that has each county's population by decade and their growth and shrinkage by percentage by each decade. As well as the current rankings of each county from highest to lowest population. There is information as to why the populations have fluctuated as well.

What do you expect the viewers of the maps you create to know?
I want my viewers to know the population density of Michigan counties over a period of time from 1900-2020.
What is the final medium for your map (it will be on the WWW) and how might this affect the way your map is created and put together?
a regular map that can be seen and posted on my site, My map will be digital

I looked up the word sketchy and found sketchers shoes. I think sketchers are a shoe brand for moms and 5 years olds.
Answer: How easy is it to find the data you need at the US Census WWW site?
